Communities and cultures across the world all have their own important customs and values. Along with these customs also come numerous events and celebrations. In this lesson, students will learn about celebrations on board Intrepid, look at giant cakes baked on the ship, and discuss similarities between celebrations on a Navy ship and how we celebrate in our own communities. .

Explore Space Science (Grades 7–12)

Students will get a tour of the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home of the space shuttle Enterprise. An educator will discuss the Mercury-Atlas 7 and Gemini III missions that occurred during the Space Race, including Intrepid's role as the primary recovery vessel for both NASA missions. Students will learn about the vacuum of space and why astronauts need spacecraft and spacesuits when they venture into Earth’s orbit and beyond. .

Students will learn about Naval communication by examining artifacts from Intrepid in its time of service. Testing their wits, students will have the opportunity to try decoding, and will learn to construct their own coded messages! .

Intrepid in the Pacific, World War II (Grades 7–12)

Using images and oral histories, students will discuss battles such as the Battle of the Philippines, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Tokubetsu Kōgekitai kamikaze suicide attack tactic, introduced in October of 1944. The experiences of Intrepid's crew will be explored, including the celebrated Gun Tub 10, a battle station assigned to African American crew members who braved their post to fire on kamikaze planes as the ship came under attack. .

Star Stories (Grades K–5)

June 1
For millennia, people have gazed at the night sky and told themselves stories about the pictures they see there. These same stars and constellations also allowed sailors to find their way back to port. Using images of the night sky, stories from different cultures and examples of simple navigation tools, an Intrepid Educator will help students view their sky in a whole new way. Materials: Blank piece of paper, coloring tools such as crayons or colored pencils. .

Amazing Aircraft(Grades 3–8)

June 2
Aircraft come in many designs and have various functions. Explore a few of the aircraft in Intrepid’s collection and create four different paper airplane projects in a design challenge led by a Museum Educator to determine how form impacts function. Materials: Four (or more) sheets of paper. .

Students will discuss the parts of a plane and how nature influences shape and design. Educators will demonstrate the four forces of flight, and children will experiment with these concepts before creating their own simple flying machines. Classes will also explore the aircraft carrier Intrepid and examine the machinery that makes flight at sea possible. .

Why is landing on the Moon so difficult? Learn all about Intrepid’s connection to the Space Race and explore the amazing engineering design process that made landing on the moon in 1969 possible. Materials: Disposable cup, recyclable materials, tape, scissors, two coins or other small objects. .

Astronomy Night: Deep Field - Hubble

The film, titled Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of our Universe, was inspired by Grammy® award-winning composer Eric Whitacre’s symphonic work Deep Field and features Hubble’s stunning imagery including brand new visualizations and fly-throughs of far-flung galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters that depict the awesome beauty of the universe.
